“LSST data: a scientific resource”
Abstract
The LSST is now under construction, and the 10-year survey of 18,000 square degrees will begin in less than 7 years. Calibrated six band data for 3.7E10 objects as a function of time will populate a novel relational database. There will be significant overlap with the Subaru sky, leveraging the complementarity of PFS spectroscopy. Each point in the surveyed sky will be visited 825 times, and the data will include 3E13 photometric measurements. I will describe the project and science themes, the data products, and international access.

Title
The environments of giant Ly-alpha blobs, probed with Subaru wide-field Ly-alpha imaging survey
Abstract
We exploit wide-field Lya imaging with Subaru to probe the environments around known giant (>100 kpc) Lya nebulae (“Lya blobs”). I will first show the example of TN J1338-1942 (TNJ1338), a powerful radio galaxy with a Lya nebula at z=4.11. We used a sample of Lya emitters (LAEs) to measure the galaxy density around TNJ1338, compared to a control sample from a blank field taken with the same instrument. We found that TNJ1338 resides in a region with a peak overdensity of delta_LAE=2.8+/-0.5 on scales of 8/h Mpc (on the sky) and 112/h Mpc (line of sight) in comoving coordinates. Adjacent to this overdensity, we found a strong underdensity where virtually no LAEs are detected. We also found that the Lya luminosity function in this field differs from that in the blank field: the number of bright LAEs (log(L_Lya[erg/s]) > 43.3) is enhanced, while the number of fainter LAEs is relatively suppressed. We used a semi-analytical model of LAEs derived from the Millennium Simulation to compare our results with theoretical predictions. While the theoretical density distribution and the luminosity function are consistent with the blank field, those in TNJ1338 field cannot be reproduced with the simulation. These results suggest that some powerful radio galaxies associated with Lya nebulae reside in extreme overdensities on ~3-6 Mpc scales, where star-formation and AGN activity may be enhanced via frequent galaxy mergers or high rates of gas accretion from the surroundings.I will then compare these results with those around other similarly extended Lya nebulae at z~3 to further investigate the relationship between the central sources and the surrounding environments.

“Reflections on the discovery of pulsars”
Abstract
In this talk I will describe the accidental discovery of pulsars (pulsating radio sources). Many astronomers have told me how they nearly discovered pulsars; I will repeat some of these accounts, focussing on the ones where pulses were seen but not ‘recognised’. Finally I will reflect on what these events tell us about the way we do science.
