Title:SCIENCE, ASTRONOMY, METEORS… IN TIME OF WAR, OR SHORT REPORT ABOUT COMMON JAPAN-UKRAINIAN INVESTIGATION OF METEORS
Abstract:
Looking on night star sky, carrying out observations of astronomical objects with telescopes, deriving formulae, writing scientific articles, preparing conference reports, and even such annoying and tedious things like annual reports… are, in actual fact, happy moments of life. Unfortunately, we understand this only in extreme conditions… like, for example, the war. In the first part of my speech I will describe the current situation in Ukraine, particularly in a capital of Ukraine – Kyiv city, and talk about astronomical community and its surviving in modern conditions. Also I will demonstrate some photos made by myself in Kyiv and from our press: about consequences of missile bombardments of Kyiv, about life between air-raid alarms followed by ‘banshee’ sounds, about blackouts after attacks of our nuclear plants and using by our small business the gasoline-electric generators as a solution of this problem.
In the second part I will describe our common scientific work with Dr. Watanabe, namely about meteor investigations. Our collaboration started in 2012 when I first time visited NAOJ, then it was continued in 2015 during my work at NAOJ as associate professor, and continues now. The main theme of our common investigations are so-called anomalous meteors: meteors with abnormal parameters like hyperbolic velocities, extreme beginning heights, grazing-atmosphere meteors, meteor cluster structures, bright bolides etc. I will briefly demonstrate out previous results based on observations, theoretical modeling and analysis, current research and possible future prospects in meteor science and its popularization.
