- X-ray astronomers are trying to work out a mystery of lightning
- Abstract
-
Terrestrial gamma-ray flashes (TGFs) are millisecond high-energy radiation from lightning, and studied from outer space by many astronomical satellites. Since 2006, our group, many of which are Japanese X-ray astronomers, has been observing high-energy atmospheric phenomena of lightning and thunderstorms from the ground in Japan. We observationally revealed that electrons can be accelerated to relativistic energies by strong electric fields in thunderstorms and lightning with generating bremsstrahlung radiation and furthermore that photonuclear reactions can be provoked by the gamma rays at lightning discharges [1]. We are now preparing for a new multi-point observation network at Kanazawa supported by the academic crowdfunding and citizen-science framework [2]. Our guiding principle is “collective power of science”. This means a scientific way using multiple detector network instead of a single huge detector. This word also implies scientific collaboration with not only professional researchers but also citizen supporters. We are also planning to launch a series of astronomical CubeSat observatories at RIKEN, starting from a small X-ray CubeSat.

- Novel methods and applications for kinetic plasma simulation
- Abstract
- Understanding the kinetic physics of plasmas is critical for many frontier problems in astrophysics, space physics, and laboratory fusion devices. One of the most powerful tools for studying kinetic plasma processes is the particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation method, which models the plasma as a set of discrete simulation particles that interact through self-consistent electromagnetic fields. In this presentation I will discuss applications of PIC simulations for understanding the fundamental plasma process magnetic reconnection, which converts magnetic field energy into plasma energy. In high-energy-density laser-driven plasmas, magnetic reconnection can occur between expanding, magnetized plasma plumes. Using PIC simulations we have modeled the particle acceleration in these experiments to demonstrate their potential as a platform for laboratory astrophysics studies of particle acceleration. In the Earth’s magnetosphere, reconnection in the extended magnetotail region can lead to explosive disruptions known as magnetospheric substorms. Using three-dimensional PIC simulations we have modeled magnetic reconnection in the magnetotail and shown the importance of coupling to the ballooning instability in the development of substorms. In the final part of the presentation, I will discuss progress in developing the novel simplex-in-cell numerical method, which may improve accuracy and reduce computational expense in PIC simulations using a phase-space interpolation technique.

- 超小型衛星で、大型衛星なみのことができるか?
- Abstract
-
超小型衛星が流行っている。
小型で低コストな超小型衛星、特に1kgのCubeSATは人気が高い。
しかし、このような超小型衛星では、大型衛星のような高性能ミッションができないと思われている。
そこで、低コストの超小型衛星でも大型衛星なみのミッションを可能にするアイデアを紹介する。 - Facilitator
