- Title
- A Space Solar Magnetometry Mission
- Abstract
- Comprehensive understanding of the physics of solar eruptions requires knowledge of the 3-dimensional magnetic and thermodynamic structures of the solar atmosphere, from the photosphere to the corona, and how these structures evolve before, during and after the eruptions. A critical requirement for the observation of the 3D magnetic, temperature, and density structures is that their temporal resolution need to be high enough to resolve the dynamic time scale of the eruptions. This knowledge can only be obtained from a space mission consists of a constellation of spacecraft in circumsolar orbits, with each spacecraft performing tomographic observations of the sun using spectroscopic and spectropolarimetric diagnostics of spectral lines with magnetic, temperature, and density sensitivities from different layer of the solar atmosphere. We will present the mission concept and the designs of a compact multi-slit disk spectrograph/spectropolarimeter, and an integral-field coronal spectropolarimeter optimized for deployment in a deep space mission. Simultaneous observations of the photospheric, chromosphere, and corona from multiple sight lines from such a space mission will provide the data needed for 3D tomographic reconstruction of the magnetic and thermodynamic structure of the solar atmosphere. New numerical studies of the efficacy of vector tomographic inversion strategies utilizing only linear polarization measurements of coronal emission lines, as well as vector tomographic inversion utilizing the full-Stokes data will be presented also.
