CO line SEDs in local (U)LIRGs with the APEX
Abstract
Using the APEX during 2006 to 2012, we obtained small maps in multiple CO transitions (CO line SEDs) towards a small sample of (U)LIRGs. With the help of large velocity gradient (LVG) radiative transfer modelling of the CO line SEDs, we investigated gas excitation of galaxies. Including the 13CO 2-1 data from the APEX, it will help us to break the degeneracies of LVG solutions. The gas excitation of the sample will be discussed and compared to other types of counterparts.

The formation of high-mass stars: new results from Herschel Space Observatory
Abstract
The HOBYS key program is a Herschel Space Observatory mapping survey dedicated to the formation of OB-type stars. With its unprecedented spatial resolution and high sensitivity in the far-infrared to submillimetre regime, it is discovering key ingredients of the formation of high-mass stars. On the molecular scales it has demonstrated the intimate link between the molecular clouds and the progenitors of high-mass stars via dynamical processes . On the parsec scale, the discovery of “mini-starburst ridges”, high-density dominating filaments supersonically contracting and efficiently forming clusters of high-mass stars is an highlight.
Their existence is predicted by dynamical models of cloud formation such as converging flows and is favoring a (high-mass) star formation scenario involving gas flows and global infall. The present star formation rate measured within these ridges is high enough for these pc-scale regions to be considered as progenitors for the formation of massive clusters and is a miniature model of extragalactic starburst.
