- Mirror Technology for the Giant Magellan Telescope
- Abstract
- The University of Arizona is building the Giant Magellan Telescope, which achieves effective aperture of 25 meters using an array of 8.4-m mirrors. These large mirrors are manufactured at the University of Arizona as lightweight castings of low expansion glass. The 3.2-m diameter secondary mirror for GMT is used as the deformable mirror for active compensation of atmospheric effects. This mirror is made from seven 1.1-m glass shells, which are 2 mm thick and supported by 672 high speed actuators. The precision required from the complex primary and secondary mirror surfaces has required advances in technologies for optical finishing and surface measurement. This talk summarizes the technical developments that were implemented for production of GMT optics and provides an overview and status of the manufacturing process.
Dr. Jim Burge is Professor of Optical Sciences and Astronomy at the University of Arizona. He directs the Large Optics Fabrication and Testing group which develops and implements advanced technologies for polishing and measuring large mirrors.
Professor Burge is also involved in research and teaching in areas of optomechanical engineering and optical system design.
Dr. Burge is a fellow of the Optical Society of America and SPIE, the Optical Engineering Society. - 連絡先
