Probabilistic Selection of z>6 Quasars: Initial Results from the First HSC SSP Data
Abstract
I will present my high-z quasar selection method using SED fitting and its application to the first HSC-SSP data.
While it is a well-known problem that the classical quasar selection based on two colors suffers from contaminating sources such as brown dwarfs, photometric redshift with multi-color photometry is a complementary way to effectively isolate high-z quasars. Since photo-z for AGN has been less explored comparing with photo-z for galaxies, I have developed template SED fitting method by myself to construct the largest z>6 quasar sample with the HSC survey.
In this talk, I will show how our selection works on the existing quasar samples such as z>3 quasars in the COSMOS field, and then report the result of the first application to the HSC-SSP data products, which results in five z>6 quasar candidates including one possible highest-redshift (z_photo=7.3) quasar.

Magnetic fields in star-forming regions: from molecular clouds to cores
Abstract
Magnetic fields affect the dynamics of the interstellar medium across a wide range of physical scales. Large-scale magnetic fields in molecular clouds, filaments and Infrared Dark Clouds are crucial ingredients on the formation of low- and high-mass star-forming regions. In this talk, I will present recent results of multi-wavelength polarimetric observations of molecular clouds and cores. Most of this research was performed toward the Pipe nebula, a suitable laboratory for early star-formation studies. Our studies reveal that starless cores have a polarimetric regime affected by the absence of internal heating, which is predicted by models of dust grain alignment. The multi-wavelength data resolves the magnetic field structure toward both starless cores and their halos, and they reveal the dynamical state of the cloud through the structure function of the position angles and the B-field strength estimations. Complementary science obtained with molecular line data reveal the chemistry and kinematics of the Pipe cores and are tentatively combined with the polarization. Ongoing and future projects focused on SMA and ALMA will be also discussed.

“Protoplanetary disks and the dawn of planets”
Abstract
Protoplanetary disk form as a result of conservation of angular momentum during the star formation process. At early stages they mediate accretion onto the forming star at the center of the system, later become the sites for planet formation. The properties and evolution of protoplanetary disk are the key for our understanding of the diversity of planetary systems and hold the promise of allowing us to understand how pre-biotic molecules are delivered on the young planets.
In this talk I will review our current understanding of the properties and evolution of protoplanetary disks as they form planetary systems. I will focus on observations with ALMA and EVLA of the evolution of solids as the first step of planet formation, but will also discuss some recent result from ALMA related to the chemistry of disks. I will finish with an outlook into the future, reaching as far as SKA.
