- “Highlights from Nearly Forty Years of Collaboration in Astronomy Between Princeton and Japan: the Princeton Perspective”
- Abstract
- Nearly forty years ago, formal collaborations between Japanese and Princeton astronomers started when Satoru Ikeuchi, then at Hokkaido University, visited Princeton and began working with Jerry Ostriker. Since then, the collaboration has blossomed into a strategic partnership that involves multiple faculty, young researchers, and students, and has led to joint projects such as the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), the SEEDS exoplanet survey, the Hyper-Suprime Cam (HSC) and Prime Focus Spectrograph (PFS) surveys, the CHARIS spectrograph instrument, NASA’s WFIRST project, and the recent establishment of the University of Tokyo as one of Princeton’s strategic global partners. I will highlight some of the important results that have come from this collaboration, as viewed by Princeton faculty and students, and discuss hopes for continuing and even extending the collaborations in the future.
