- “The Origin of the Sunspot Cycle”
- Abstract
- The 11-year cycle of sunspots is produced by a magnetohydrodynamic process known as the dynamo process taking place in the turbulent convection zone of the Sun. After summarizing the phenomenology of the sunspot cycle, I shall give an introduction to the basic concepts of dynamo theory. The talk will end with a brief discussion of some current research problems in this field in which our group is interested.

- Spectro-polarimetric studies of Sunspot and its fine-structure

Spectro-polarimetry is the key to understand the physical properties of the solar atmosphere. At Udaipur Solar Observatory (USO), an imaging spectro-polarimeter has been developed to carry out the simultaneous spectro-polarimetric (SP) observations of the photosphere (Fe I 617.3 nm spectral line) and chromosphere (Ca II 854.2 nm). In this talk, I will present the details of a new Milne-Eddington inversion code (named as
SPIN) developed specifically to invert SP data of Multi-Application Solar Telescope (MAST). I will also discuss the details of tests performed to validate the SPIN code and its application to inverting the MAST/SP data. In addition to this, physical properties of umbral dots using high-resolution G-band images obtained from Hinode space-based telescope will be discussed. I will also discuss the relationship between the umbral dots and macro-properties of the sunspots. - Facilitator

- Highlight Events from Solar Neutron Observation during 25 years
- Abstract

25 years have passed since I have engaged in the research job to study the acceleration mechanism of ions in association with solar flares through the neutron channel. In this lecture I would like to present a few interesting events and discuss about the acceleration mechanism of ions in these events. The examples presented are: neutrons observed on June 4/6th of 1991, on September 7th of 2005, and on March 3rd, 2011.
On the event of March 3rd 2011, high energy gamma-rays were detected by the mountain detector located at 4,600m altitude on Mt. Sierra Negra in Mexico. At the same time the solar neutron detector located at the International Space Station (SEDA on ISS) detected solar neutrons. We have performed a simulation based on the GEANT4 program and will try to explain whether the results are reasonably explained by the simulation.
Furthermore I will present another interesting event observed on June 3rd of 2012 by SEDA and FERMI-LAT detectors. The FERMI-LAT detector observed high-energy photons with energies up to 500 MeV. The flare was extremely impulsive, only shone 1-minute, however high-energy neutrons and gamma-rays were detected. We will challenge by the GEANT4 program whether we can reasonably explain this event by the helium rich acceleration model or not. Finally I will briefly show the neutron event observed by the gigantic solar flare observed on September 10th of 2017. - Facilitator

- 「重力波イベント GW170817 」”GW170817: the last minutes of a neutron star binary”

2017年10月16日、連星中性子星合体が起源である可能性が極めて高い重力波イベン
ト、
GW170817の検出が発表されました。先にノーベル賞を受賞した史上初の重力波直接
検出(こちらは連星ブラックホール合体からのものでしたが)とあわせて、重力波に
よって
宇宙を観測する「重力波天文学」開拓への大きな一歩となりました。
GW170817では、重力波検出のアラートを受けて、γ線から電波に至る波長帯での
迅速な追観測が行われました。γ線バーストや kilonova/macronova といった突発的
天体現象が
連星中性子星合体と同時に起こっていた可能性を明らかにしたこれらの観測は、
「マルチメッセンジャー天文学」の先鞭をなす成果といえます。
また、後者の kilonova/macronova は r過程元素の崩壊熱に起因するものであるた
め、
連星中性子星がr過程元素の起源である可能性も大きく高まっています。
このGW170817 からの重力波検出とそれに付随する電磁波放射の観測に関しては、
夥しい数の研究が発表されていますが、本講演ではそれらの研究に自身のものを含め
て、
その基本的な成果をまとめ、今後の展望について議論したいと思います。 - 連絡先
