- Modeling Solar Flares with the HYDRAD code
- Abstract
- Hydrodynamic modeling has played an important role in our understanding of solar flares for almost 40 years. I will discuss the state-of-the-art HYDrodynamics and RADiative (HYDRAD) code that has been adapted for the modeling of solar flares. I will review the physics that are important for proper modeling, and discuss methodologies that are used to understand energy release and transport in flares. I will discuss two recent results in particular. First, the modeling of X-ray emission may be able to discriminate between the commonly discussed transport mechanisms of electron beam heating and thermal in situ heating, using a combination of observations and modeling. Second, resistive damping of Alfvenic waves may play an important role in the heating of solar flares. I will discuss the implications of this possibility.
