Title: Mass accretion onto active supermassive blackholes – ALMA <0.02″ observations of the nearby archetypal AGN NGC 1068 –
Abstract: In an active galactic nucleus (AGN), it is believed that a mass accreting supermassive black hole (SMBH) is responsible for bright compact emission and is surrounded by a dusty molecular torus at <10 pc scale. This model can naturally explain various observational properties of AGNs. However, it is theoretically unclear how the central SMBH can be fueled from the dusty molecular torus. ALMA is a very powerful observing facility to scrutinize the properties of the putative dusty molecular torus (<10 pc or <0.15″ at ~15 Mpc), because of high angular resolution and high sensitivity. In this talk, I will report the results of our ALMA <0.02″-resolution observations of the nearby (~14 Mpc) well-studied archetypal AGN, NGC 1068, and propose a mass accretion mechanism onto a SMBH in a luminous AGN, based on the detection of a counter-rotating dense molecular torus.

Title:Current cosmological simulations of galaxy formation have been successful in explaining many observed properties of galaxies. There are, however, some tensions between the simulations and observations. I briefly describe the current status of simulations of galaxy formation. I then introduce our recent attempts to develop new star formation recipes in galaxy scale simulations. The new method allows us to identify star-forming clouds and detect collisions between the clouds during galaxy-scale simulations. I show some preliminary results obtained by a collision-induced star formation model.
