Astronomy EPO in the With Corona Era-Reading the IAU Strategic Plan 2020-2030 & “Big Ideas in Astronomy” - Abstract
-
There are concerns about the spread of excessive nationalism and individualism as well as the shrinking size of the economy as the COVID-19 infection spreads. Why is internationalism and inclusion so important in the age of with Corona? In this talk, we will decipher the implications from the IAU strategic plan 2020-2030 and astronomical literacy proposals “Big Ideas in Astronomy”, which are at the forefront of 21st century science and technology.

- Title
- Shock waves along recurrent cool jets associated with chromospheric reconnection
- Abstract
- Chromospheric activities associated with magnetic flux cancellations in emerging active region NOAA 12654 were observed with IRIS, IBIS at the DST, and Hinode on May 2, 2017. IRIS observed the cancellation site with a 4-slit raster mode at a cadence of 12s. Spectro-polarimetric observations of the Ca II 854 nm line were done with IBIS/DST for three hours under good seeing conditions. Hinode/SP repeatedly scanned the same region at 4-minute raster cadence in the Fast map mode. We find that the core intensity of Mg II h & k lines is suddenly blue shifted and then gradually changes to red shift with cool jets ejected from a cancellation site at the center of the active region. Similar behavior is observed in the Ca II 854 nm and Mg II triplet lines, and such phenomena recurrently appear for about 1.5 hours. Two different timescales of the transition from blue shift to red shift are observed. One is of the order of minutes that was observed in Ca II 854 nm, Mg II triplet and Mg II h & k line. It is almost same timescale of the recurrent cool jets observed in Ca II 854 nm images. Another is more frequent transitions on a shorter timescale can be seen only in Mg II h & k line. A signature of magnetic reconnection in the lower atmosphere is also obtained: the intensities of the Ca II 854nm blue wing, AIA 1600A, and IRIS/SJI 140nm are enhanced at the footpoint of the recurrent cool jets. These results suggest that the low frequency transitions from the blue to red shifts are caused by the up and downward motion of the recurrent cool jets due to magnetic reconnection in the lower chromosphere, and the high frequency transitions are related to the shock waves along the cool jets.
