- Title
Mathematics for Astronomy”
- Abstract
-
As “Necessity is the mother of invention”, the development of some part of mathematics has been driven by the needs in astronomy. Kepler created the Kepler equation, the first transcendental equation, to determine the position of a planet on its orbit, Newton showed his genius in regularizing a singular integral to obtain the universal attraction of a spherically symmetric object, and Gauss utilized his least square method to predict the orbit of a lost asteroid, Ceres.
This talk presents various mathematical recipe on the following issues developed by the author: 1) Kepler equation, latitude equation, and Lambert’s W function, 2) elliptic functions and elliptic integrals, 3) associated Legendre function and Wigner’s d-function of arbitrary high degree/order/characteristic,4) regularization of Newton integrals, 5) Fermi-Dirac integrals and Bose-Einstein integrals, 6) method of manifold correction, 7) parallel extrapolation method, and 8) Picard-Chebyshev integration method. - Facilitator
