Testing the triggering of star-formation in starburst and AGN host galaxies on the 50-parsec-scale with strong gravitational lensing
Abstract
Our view of the high redshift Universe has recently been revolutionised through the development / upgrade of cm and mm-wavelength interferometric arrays. By combining the new resolution and frequency parameter space that have been made available with the JVLA and ALMA, with strong gravitational lensing, we are now able to resolve the stars, dust and molecular gas emission within extreme starburst and AGN host galaxies on 50-100 parsec-scales out to redshifts of ~3. In this talk, I will present a novel method for modelling the gravitational lensing data from interferometric arrays, and its application to both starburst and AGN dominated systems. In particular, I will discuss the structure of the lensed starburst galaxy SDP.81, at redshift 3 on 50 parsec-scales, which was observed with the long baseline array of ALMA. This object is found to have a reconstructed velocity field that is consistent with a merger/post-coalescence merger scenario for the triggering of the extreme star-formation. I will also discuss new results on the gravitationally lensed quasar RXJ 1131-1231, which shows a spectacular Einstein ring in the CO (2-1) molecular gas distribution with observed with ALMA. These new data are used to i) test global lens mass models, ii) measure the dynamical mass of the host and
iii) identify micro-lensing in the mm-continuum emission. Finally, I will present the results from a Herschel survey of 104 lensed quasars, which demonstrate the there is extreme dust obscured star-formation in the vast majority of the quasars at redshifts between 1 and 4.
