- ” Exploring Global Warming with Climate Models”
- Abstract
- Looking back about 60 years, I would like to present some of the results from the studies of global warming that I have been involved. One of the most powerful tools for investigating global warming is a climate model, which is often called coupled atmosphere-ocean-land surface model. It is based upon laws of physics as expressed by hydrodynamical equation of motion, thermodynamical equation, equation of radiative transfer according to Kirkhoff’s law, and Clapeyron-Clausius equation of saturation vapor pressure of air and so on. Using a climate model as virtual laboratory, we have conducted many numerical experiments, exploring the physical mechanism of climate change. Based upon the results from these experiments, I shall attempt to predict how climate is going to change during the next few centuries and explain the physical mechanism involved. In addition, I would like to show that salient features of the climate change thus obtained has begun to emerge from observation.
