Radio Astronomy, Interstellar Physics
Degree
-
Ph. D.
Summary of Research
-
My field of expertise is radio astronomy, and in particular, I am studying a wide variety of topics, including the structure, motion, physical and chemical state, distribution, formation, and evolution of interstellar molecular clouds, as well as the formation of star/planet systems and the formation and evolution of galaxies, for which these molecular clouds hold the key. I earned my Ph.D. degree in the Galactic Plane survey using the world's smallest radio telescope. In addition to the research using the radio telescopes in Nobeyama and other telescopes, I have been involved in the construction and operation of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), the world's largest radio telescope, at the 5000 m site in Chile. From April to December 2018, I served as the Director of the NAOJ Chile Observatory. I am currently the Head of the East Asian Integrated Engineering Team of ALMA. From April 2007 to July 2014, I served as the Director of Education and Public Outreach at the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science (ISAS), JAXA, where I coordinated education and public outreach, and external relations activities related to space science research. I also actively promote regional cooperation.
